John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., the founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates, LLP has been re-appointed by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano to serve another three-year term on the Long Island Regional Planning Council. His appointment was confirmed by a 19-0 vote of the Legislature. Cameron serves as the council’s chairman, having been unanimously re-elected to his post by its 12 members earlier this year.

The council represents Nassau and Suffolk counties in long-range planning. It also serves as a major voice for Long Island and as an advocate on issues affecting local governmental policy, regionally significant projects, grants and funding.

One of its major initiatives, the development of the island’s long-term sustainability plan —“LI-2035”— is completing its first phase. This phase will outline sustainable strategies for the Island. It addresses such overarching issues as the economy, tax and governance, infrastructure and equity. Key elements of the plan include economic development, property taxes, job creation, affordability, housing, education, health care, transportation, energy, water, wastewater, waste management, the natural environment and social equity. The Sustainable Strategies Plan Document is expected to be released by the summer.

In recognition of his leadership role on the council and other organizations, Cameron was named by the Long Island Press to its 2010 Power List, designating Long Island’s “Top 50 Most Influential and Powerful Long Islanders.” He also recently received the David Award for business and community leadership from Networking Magazine, the Norman J. Levy Humanitarian Award by the Nassau County Republican Committee and he was selected as Engineer of the Year by the Nassau Chapter of the New York Society of Professional Engineers.

Cameron Engineering just celebrated its 25th anniversary in business as a premier consulting, engineering and planning firm. The Woodbury-based company has received numerous national, state and local awards.

Cameron lives in Rockville Centre with his wife, Loretta. His newlywed son Andrew and his wife Colleen reside in Lynbrook and his daughter, Christine, lives in Manhattan.
