Do you know what the Friends are doing?

The Rockville Centre Friends of the Library are a group of volunteers dedicated to the enhancement of library resources, working with library staff to provide additional services to the community. They want residents to know more about the specific programs they provide and to solicit suggestions for others.

The Friends finance the Museum Pass Program, providing free admission to museums on Long Island and New York City. MOMA, Museum of Natural History, and the LICM are a few of the participants in the program. Passes are available on a first come, first served basis.

The Friends finance the “Library To Your Door Program.” This is a free

service to homebound residents, providing them with access to many library resources that are distributed by mail.

The group also supports the acquisition of equipment and the beautification of the library landscape. Easels, new carpet and bookcases in the Children’s Room were gifts from the Friends, as were the planters and benches decorating the grounds.

In addition, the Friends support the Summer Reading and Young Adult programs that encourage children in the community to use the library and become lifetime readers.

The group’s main support is through your membership. Its annual book sale also provides funds. This year they have the support of RVC Lanes in a bowling

fundraiser on Nov. 22 (see the Community Update section for details).

Group organizers say new members are always welcome. If you are interested in becoming a member or have suggestions for the Friends, contact lackwright@aol.com.
