Exploring the library and the Nook

Posted

The students of St. Agnes school celebrated National Library Week by joining forces with the Oceanside library and engaging in a live video question and answer session with children’s librarian Barbara Buckley.

Among many interesting questions was one about bookstores which, unlike libraries, do not use the Dewey Decimal System. They organize their books by subject. The question posed to Buckley was which system does she like better?

Buckley gave her explanation and also shared information about the many different types of programs the Oceanside library offers.

In another book-related program that bridged the gap between paper books and digital technology, seventh grade students at the school assessed the many e-book options that are now available. They studied all that these devices have to offer, and were asked to write a persuasive essay on which e-book they prefer. As a culminating event, they had a visit from two Barnes and Noble representatives who presented the Nook (Barnes and Noble's e-book device) and enabled the students to have a hands on experience with it.
