William S. Covert Elementary School celebrated its annual Literacy Week with a resounding bilingual theme, "Reading is a Fiesta," an event made possible by the generous support of the Raymar Children's Fund.

This year, the school invited the renowned Teatro Society of the Educational Arts Theatre to elevate the festivities. Recognized as the premier Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino children's Theatre in the United States, Teatro SEA has been captivating audience members since its establishment in 1985 by Dr. Manuel A. Morán. Their educational center, located in Manhattan's lower east side, serves as a beacon of artistic and cultural enrichment.

Eager to immerse students in bilingualism and foster a profound understanding of the Spanish language and culture, the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools team set out to make the experience unforgettable. They chose Teatro SEA's captivating production centered around the iconic figure, Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo's compelling life story resonated with many students, as they often arrived with a wealth of knowledge about this legendary artist and activist. Teatro SEA's production, "Los Colores de Frida” — The Colors of Frida — provided an exceptional opportunity for students to not only expand student’s knowledge of Frida Kahlo, but also to share their existing insights about her.

The FLES team used this production as a springboard to explore a diverse array of topics in Spanish, from colors to emotions, cognates to Kahlo's artwork, and her origins.

The initiative received invaluable support from the RVC Education Foundation, allowing all elementary students in Rockville Centre to witness this stellar production about one of the world's most intriguing Spanish-speaking figures. The performance not only enhanced learning but also fostered engaging discussions and cultural enrichment.
