Going gold in Rockville Centre

At the Board of Trustees meeting on Sept. 8, the Village of Rockville Centre honored Sal and Marie Giallombardo for their efforts in raising awareness of childhood cancer and helping the village Go Gold.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To help spread awareness, people are encouraged to “Go Gold” by decorating their homes with gold-colored objects and wearing gold pins or ribbons.

The Giallombardos started the Gina Giallombardo Benefit for Life in memory of their daughter, Gina, who died from rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft-tissue pediatric cancer, in 2011.

“We would like to thank Mayor Murray, the town of Rockville Centre, and our family and friends for supporting us through our journey in attempting to raise awareness for childhood cancer,” the Giallombardos said in an email to the Herald.
