Head basketball coach to be inducted

Posted

Jeff Weiss, known to many in Rockville Centre for his involvement with Game 7 youth programs and as the director of athletics and head basketball coach at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, has been selected for induction into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY).

Weiss began his career at Lawrence Woodmere Academy in 1988 and has an overall win-loss record of 377-129, a success that is notable due to the school’s “no-cut” policy that allows all interested students to join teams, regardless of their ability level.

Weiss describes himself as a very straightforward, honest coach. “I try to emphasize the team concept and preparation,” he said. “Their high school sports career is very short, so they should make the most out of it and have fun.  I love seeing our students enjoy their athletic success and many of them have gone on to compete in college.”

In considering a candidate for induction, the BCANY Hall of Fame Committee evaluates five areas: the number of years the candidate has been a coach, their win-loss percentage, number of championships won per year, their service and contribution to the game of basketball or the coaching of basketball, and the honors and awards received during their career.

The Induction Ceremony for the eight inductees will be held at 11 a.m. on March 27 at Heritage Hall of the Glens Falls Civic Center.
