If we host it, Rockville Centre's teens will come

RVC Youth Council sponsors 'midnight' bowling; will hold open house on Wednesday

Posted

Organizers of the Rockville Centre Youth Council’s second Bowling Night called it a “tremendous success,” as over 90 local teens packed 18 alleys at the Rockville Centre Lanes between 10 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on May 7.

For a cover fee of $8 per person, thanks to sponsors that included the Rockville Centre Police Department, the Rockville Centre Lions Club and the Crowley family, local kids enjoyed two hours of bowling, shoes and dessert provided by a legion of bakers, including South Side High School’s PTA moms. All of the leftover baked goods were delivered to the soup kitchen at the Holy Redeemer Church in Freeport (where the RVC Lions Club, whose members chaperoned the bowling night, was volunteering at 8:30 the next morning). Students leaving the event said they liked it so much that they would attend an activity like midnight bowling at least once-a-month.

The Youth Council is hosting an open house this Wednesday — described separately on this page. Starting next week, the council plans to distribute a student survey that was developed by an adult-student team —Jeannette Meoli and Nicole Bernhardt — regarding a possible teen center or coffee house in the village. The survey will be distributed to public and private high school and rising 8th grade students to gauge their interest in a gathering place like that. Once the results are tabulated, by the end of June, the council will get back to the community with its findings.

In addition, the RVC Youth Council is now officially a 501c3 public charity — the highest level under IRS rules — so donations are now tax exempt. The designation also means it can begin to investigate public and private grant funding, and Jeanne Mulry, the council's secretary, has already begun looking into funding for a teen center.
