For those who believe spending time with friends and family on a beautiful lake will floats their boat — and that should be a lot of people — then they’ll likely want make sure they check out the Rockville Centre Conservancy’s upcoming Kayak the Lake event.

Gathering at Hempstead Lake on Sunday, July 24, Kayak the Lake allows those attending from in and around Rockville Centre to rent kayaks and enjoy time on the water.

This year’s event expects to draw close to 100 people — all with the hope of no rain, which washed out the original Kayak the Lake event last month.

The conservancy’s mission is to bring to mind the beauty of Rockville Centre. This grassroots organization is made up of community volunteers, and aims to enhance Rockville Centre by working with the village government identifying and improving public places in the village that need restoration.

“Seeing the lake from the water rather than the shore gives you a whole different perspective on its vastness, and allows you to appreciate what a great resource it is for the community,” conservancy member Matt Cliszis said. “We hope this event can help give everybody an awareness of the beauty of the environment and the lake.”

Kayak the Lake takes place at Hempstead Lake State Park beginning at 10 a.m., and running until noon. Parking is available for $8 at Field 1, with the kayak launch taking place right on the lake adjacent to the field.

In fact, this will be the first year attendees can utilize the park’s new kayak launches.

Renting a double kayak for 30 minutes costs $25, while a single kayak is available for $20 for every half-hour. For those who would like to bring their own kayak, there is a $10 fee.

But to get those deals, participants will have to register in advance. Otherwise, anyone who just shows up can participate, but could end up paying more.

Life vests, however, will be provided free of charge.
Once launched, those relaxing in their kayak will have the next 30 minutes to enjoy paddling on and exploring the largest lake in Nassau County.
