Long Island Rail Road riders traveling to Hunterspoint Ave. or Atlantic Terminal will be entitled to a fare reduction averaging 25 percent during Amtrak’s repair work, the Metropolitan Transit Authority announced Tuesday. The fare reduction will take effect July 10, and will end when Amtrak’s repair work at Penn Station has been completed.

Reduced fares will be apply to monthly, weekly and daily tickets, and discounted monthly tickets will be available via ticket windows, ticket vending machines and mail and ride beginning June 20. Discounted tickets will be available via MTA eTix starting on July 1.

The fare reduction will also be available to customers traveling to Long Island City, Nostrand Avenue and East New York.

LIRR ticket holders will be able to transfer to the subway for free during the morning rush hours at the Atlantic Terminal, Jamaica, and Hunterspoint Ave. stations only.

“We believe that this move will mitigate the inconvenience that our customers may experience, and have the added benefit of drawing customers away from Penn Station while Amtrak performs repair work,” said MTA Interim Director Ronnie Hakim.

The MTA stated it would be alerting customers to the discount through e-mails alerts, Twitter messages, Facebook posts, electronic signs and message boards in key terminals, and on its Train Time app. Mail and Ride customers will receive an email informing them that they can return unused Mail and Ride tickets for a full credit.
