Mercy, Rockville Centre Lions to offer free diabetes lecture

Posted

In partnership with the Rockville Centre Lions Club, Mercy Medical Center invites the community to a free lecture on Diabetes Awareness and Risk Factors – on March 22 at 7 p.m. The presentation is being held in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association’s annual Diabetes Alert Day and “Join the Million Challenge” calling for one million people to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 of the disease.

An estimated one quarter of the nearly 26 million Americans living with diabetes don’t know they have the condition, putting them at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage or nerve damage that can lead to amputations. And another 79 million American adults have pre-diabetes, placing them at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

The program at Mercy will be presented by Maria Jacobi, a physician assistant and Certified Diabetes Educator who has been caring for diabetes patients for over a decade.

Advance registration for the presentation is not required. It will be conducted in the employee dining room on the lower level of the medical center’s North Pavilion. Light refreshments will be provided and free parking will be available.
