Police keep the calm in Rockville Centre

Rockville Centre police reported that extra enforcement over the Thanksgiving holiday — one of the busiest times of the year for local establishments — kept incidents in the village to a minimum. The department had extra officers and extra patrols in the central business district, near the licensed bars and restaurants.

Despite the stepped up police presence, a department spokesman said that there were about a dozen disturbances in the village on Thanksgiving eve. There were no arrests in two reported assaults that took place over the weekend — one on Front Street near the taxi stand on Nov. 24 and another outside McFadden’s Bar on Merrick Road early Sunday morning. Police said that the people involved fled before officers arrived.

The spokesman also said that there were no DWI arrests on village roads over the weekend, although Nassau County police reported 87 arrests on county roads over the Thanksgiving holiday period, up from 75 last year.
