Repairing village hall

The Rockville Centre board of trustees approved $405,000 of repairs to village hall at the Nov. 3 board of trustees meeting. These repairs include replacing the roof, gutters, leaders, eaves and fascia.

A leader is the pipe that brings water downward. An eave is the bottom edge of a roof overhang and fascia is a horizontal band that runs around a roof edge.

“Village hall was built in 1892 and will be celebrating its 125th birthday in less than 3 years,” wrote village spokesperson Julie Scully in an email.  “Two years ago the village had an engineer perform an evaluation of the entire building from the ceiling to the roof and everything in between. The village will be making these repairs to protect the value of the infrastructure.”

The repair work was awarded to Rockville Centre-based Talty Construction Inc. “After negotiating with the low bidder, Talty Construction Inc.,” said village administrator Keith Spadaro at the board of trustees meeting. “They agreed to lower their price to $405,000 from $425,000.”

The repair work will start as soon as possible and is expected to take six months, although that could change due to weather. The village will pay for this construction with bond proceeds in the capital budget. Payback rates will not be determined until the next fiscal year because debt service will not begin until then, according to village comptroller Michael Schussheim.

Three other companies, Outer Country Construction Corp., N.J.K Contractors, Inc. and PETK Inc. also sent in their bid for the work.
