Rockville Centre boys play for 91 Lacrosse

More than 70 families from Rockville Centre travelled to Lehigh University over the Father’s Day weekend to watch their boys participate in a lacrosse tournament. Approximately 270 boys’ lacrosse teams from across the Northeast participated in the Lehigh Laxfest.

Four teams from Rockville Centre consisting of 5th and 6th graders, 7th graders, junior varsity and varsity lacrosse players competed under the banner of “91 Lacrosse.” While most of the teams who participated in the tournament were select teams made up of boys from many different towns and regions, the boys from Rockville Centre were competitive and played hard.

Each of the 91 lacrosse teams won two games and lost two games. Peter Gibbons, a teacher at Watson Elementary School who is the assistant coach of the South Side High School varsity lacrosse team, was the coach of the 5th and 6th grade team.

Colin Serling, a former stand out lacrosse player at South Side High School and current player at Lafayette College, coached the 7th grade team.

Mike Lucchesi (who is an assistant coach of South Side High School's boys' varsity lacrosse team) coached the 91 JV team along with Michael Cove (who is the 8th grade boys lacrosse coach at South Side Middle School).

The 91 varsity team is coached by Tim Tuttle and Steve Serling (who, like his brother Colin, played at SSHS and at Lafayette College).

91 Lacrosse is dedicated to bringing together competitive and ambitious young athletes in an effort to enhance their lacrosse skills and improve both their knowledge and their love of the game through intense, educational practices and tournaments. 91 Lacrosse was started by Brian Spallina, a two-time All-American defenseman at Hofstra University and four-time Major Lacrosse League champion who is a local elementary school teacher.

Members of the Rockville Centre teams say they hope to continue their success with four more lacrosse tournaments over the next five weekends.
