Community Events

St. Marks Cooperative Nursery School

There are limited openings at St. Marks, 200 Hempstead Ave., for the following ages: to register for the 2-Year Old Program contact Elly Reardon at (516) 992-2458; to register for the 3-Year Old Program contact Katie Levine at (516) 594-5684; to register for the 4-Year Old Program contact Terri Nugent at (516) 594-1254. All registration is ongoing.

Homemakers Club

The Rockville Centre chapter of Homemakers meets every Tuesday at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center on Oceanside Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Winter Exhibit at Phillips House

The Museum of Rockville Centre's winter exhibit at the Phillips House, 28 Hempstead Ave., is American cut glass (from the Brilliant Period of the mid-to-late 1800s), pressed and cranberry glass from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. Examples of cranberry glass include a rare whale oil lamp cut to clear and an eight-sided French perfume bottle   There are several variety of vases, candy dishes and baskets and a unique paneled sugar shaker. These pieces are uniquely displayed with cut crystal bowls, vases and Victorian napkin rings. The museum is open from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment.  Call (516) 764 -7459 for further information. The museum has no entry fee.

Drawing workshop

The Village Art Club will present a live male model for its drawing workshop to be held on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockville Centre Public Library, 221 N. Village Ave. Bring yourself and drawing supplied. Admission is free and open to non-members. For more information on membership in the club or other events, call (516) 764-1950.

Fortnightly Club meeting

On March 2 the Fortnightly Club will investigate a hitherto unexplained fine art. The program will be led by a dynamic woman artist. The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave.

Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave. is sponsoring a spring session, with daytime and evening yoga classes, open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 10 classes each, beginning on the evening of March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and the morning of March 3 at 9:30 a.m. Each series of classes is available for $120. or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Springtime in Paris

The St. Agnes Mothers' Club Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held on March 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Garden City Hotel. Fashions will be provided by Fox's. Tickets are $50 each. For reservations, call Carol at (516) 764-1190.

Defensive Driving Course

Mercy Medical Center will offer the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course on March 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Mercy League Lounge located across from the entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department.Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible for 10% off their motor vehicle insurance for three years and/or a reduction of points from their driver’s license. Interfaith Dialogue at Molloy

On March 7 at 3 p.m., Molloy College’s Institute for Interfaith Dialogue will present a program on the religious rituals observed in various cultures across the globe, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Charles Kimball, presidential professor and director of religious studies at the University of Oklahoma. The event is free and open to the public, and will take place at the Hays Theatre, Wilbur Arts Center on the school’s Rockville Centre campus. Promise and Potential

Molloy College's half-day Green Economy Conference on March 12 from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. will feature keynote speaker, Peter Fusaro, Chairman of Global Change Associates, followed by panel discussions featuring government and business leaders. $50 per person includes post-event networking reception. Crafts Fair

On March 13 from 10 a.m. –4 p.m., Molloy College’s senior class will host a crafts fair, in the Anselma Room, Kellenberg Hall and will showcase handmade items, baked goods, raffles and lots more. Fortnightly Club meeting

On March 16 the Fortnightly Club presents Rockville Centre Mayor Mary Bossart. who will speak on "Women In History." The meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave. Refreshments will be served after the program.

On Broadway — A Musical Review!

The Island Park Theatre Group, in concert with The Island Park Schools and Recreation Department, will present "On Broadway — A Musical Revue!" featuring local talent of all ages from all communities. Performances will be March 14, 3 p.m. ($10 discount tickets for seniors.) March 19 and 20 at 8 p.m.; and a matinee on March 21 at 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Orens School Middle School, 150 Trafalgar Blvd., Island Park. For tickets and more information, call (516) 431-3320.

Cans for a Cause returns

Help fight hunger on Long Island by bringing canned food donations to the Library through February 19th!

is now open on Saturdays. Five computers available for your job search needs. All computers are equipped with Win-Way Resume Preparation software, MS Word and Office programs. Internet access and bookmarked job search Web sites. Printing available for resumes and cover letters. Defensive Driving

Sunday Afternoon Concert Series

Mitch Kahn presents “Music from the Movies,” 2 p.m. Just in time for the Oscars, join popular entertainer Mitch Kahn as he presents favorite tunes from the movies— some Oscar winners and some not. You’re sure to be humming along to your favorite theme songs from popular movies both new and old. There is no charge for this program.

11:30 a.m. Certified fitness instructor Marilyn Bunger leads this popular exercise class to improve strength and flexibility. You must be registered to attend this class. There is a $10 fee per six class session.

Chi Gong

10:30 a.m. Join Marianna Farina for this ancient Chinese art based on meditative movement and breathing techniques. Dress comfortably. No special equipment necessary. Register at the Adult Reference Desk. There is a $10 fee for this six week program.

AlisCat Instruction

10:30 a.m. Register at the Adult Reference Desk for this one-session class designed to teach the card catalog. Attendees should be RVC cardholders who are familiar with using a mouse.

Yoga with Joe

1 p.m. Yoga continues with popular instructor Joe Cilmi. Participants must register and pay a $10 per six week session fee for this class. Register at the Adult Reference Desk.

Mother Daughter Book Discussion

7:30 p.m. Tonight’s book is Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Come share your thoughts and a tasty treat with your friends and their Moms. For girls and their moms in grades 4-6. Register in the Children’s Room.

Rec Center Nursery School

Registrations are now being accepted for the RVC Recreation Center’s Nursery School programs fro the 2010-11 school year. Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2011 are offered five days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from, 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Pre-Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are offered Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. To schedule an appointment to visit the school, call the Recreation Center office at (516) 678-9338.

Connor and Friends

One Sunday a month from 2:30-4 p.m., trained recreation personnel provide a fun and safe activity environment for children with special needs, including autism and Down Syndrome. These playdates, scheduled for Feb. 28 and March 21, must be reserved with Paul Lawless at MPLawless@verizon.net.

AARP Tax Assistance Program:

Representatives from the AARP Tax

Assistance Program will be at the Sandel Senior Center every Friday morning from 9:00am to 12 noon beginning Feb. 5. You must make an appointment by calling the Sandel Senior Center. This service is available to RVC Seniors 60+.

Mary Todd Lincoln

Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. Robin Heaney re-enacts the life story of President Abraham Lincoln’s wife. $2 pp. ( A $4 late sign-up fee applies).

Lions Recycle

The Sandel Center is now an official drop-off point for used or broken prescription eyeglasses, non-prescription sunglasses, old hearing aids and old cell phones. Donations can be brought to the Senior Center Mon-Fri from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Sandel Senior Men’s Club:

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10:00am for breakfast and business. At 11:00 am, when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for July and August.

Religious Events

Special Needs Mass

The Parish of St. Agnes welcomes all to its monthly Mass for special needs children of all ages and their families. The next Mass is on Feb. 27. These Masses are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Msgr. Melton Auditorium which is handicapped accessible through the Parish Center.
