Rockville Centre firefighters set to vote on April 7

The chief elections for the Rockville Centre Fire Department are scheduled for April 7. Members of the department will vote for Chief of Department (John Busching), 1st Assistant Chief (John Thorp) and 2nd Assistant Chief (Robert Seaman and Brian Cook are both running for the position).

John Busching

John H. Busching joined the fire department in January 1984. He became a Level I fire fighter, EMT, advanced EMT and paramedic. He has served as second lieutenant, first lieutenant and twice as captain of Floodlight Rescue Company No. 1. He currently holds the position of as 1st Assistant Chief. Busching is seeking to be elected to the position of Chief of Department in the upcoming vote.

Busching lives with his wife, Christine, a physician assistant at Mercy Medical Center and their son, Joseph. He received the Silver Award for heroism from the Nassau County Fire Commission for a rescue in 2009.

John Thorp

John Thorp, a member of Eureka Hook, Ladder & Bucket Company #1, is a candidate for the position of 1st Assistant Chief of the fire department.

Thorp joined the department at the age of 18 and has been an active and dedicated member for more than 35 years. He follows in the footsteps of a long line of Thorp family members, whose service dates back to 1920.

Thorp served as lieutenant and then captain of Hook & Ladder from 1979 to 1983, as lieutenant from 1988 to 1992 and then again as lieutenant and captain from 1996 to 2001 — a total of more than 15 years’ experience as a line officer. After serving out his last term as an officer, Thorp was elected to serve as a warden on the Fire Council, the governing body of the RVC Fire Department, and served in that leadership position until his election two years ago as 2nd Assistant Chief.

In addition to serving on and chairing various Hook & Ladder company committees over the past 35 years, Thorp served on the department’s Entertainment, Fundraising and Athletic Committees and the Department Color Guard and has been the chairman of the Fireman’s Field Committee for more than five years.
