Our heroic first responders

To the Editor:

Recently, my wife and I received a call to come to the home of dear friends, where the husband was undergoing resuscitation efforts after a heart attack. When we arrived, both sides of the street were filled with ambulances and cars from the fire and police departments.

Inside, there were approximately a dozen responders. Seven or eight of them were on the floor, fully engaged in the resuscitation effort, with oxygen, intravenous lines and other medical equipment. The room was surprisingly quiet, with no conversation unrelated to their work.

Sadly, the responders’ efforts were unavailing and ended 45 minutes after we arrived. But their efforts were impressively untiring, professional, dedicated and respectful of the deceased and the family members present.

In my opinion, their efforts were heroic. They live and work in Rockville Centre. They are our local heroes, and we are fortunate to have them in our community.

Kremer has tunnel vision

To the Editor:

It’s ironic that Jerry Kremer, in his column “Our state legislators don’t get a fair shake” (Jan. 21-27), attempted to correct his tunnel vision by seeing things through rose-colored glasses.

Although he pointed out that the unemployment situation appears to be improving, low-paying jobs largely account for this, and many people have simply given up looking for decent employment and therefore are no longer included in the statistics.

Can we really credit our politicians for the recent drop in oil prices, or do factors other than “political wisdom” account for the glut of oil on the world market? And Kremer chastised those who would scale back political correctness — although this seems to be a major contributor to the crumbling of traditional American values and our social order.
