Rockville Centre Letters to the Editor - 9-17

A thousand thanks

To the Editor:

This is to express my heartfelt appreciation and deep thanks to the person who turned in the digital camera that I inadvertently left behind on the platform of the Rockville Centre LIRR station on the morning of Aug. 24. I can't tell you how relieved I was to find it waiting for me when I went to the ticket window the next morning.

It would have been easy for you to walk away with the camera, but I'm grateful for the fine character you showed in turning it in. My hope is that this blessing you have given me is returned to you a thousand times.

Wishes for a

peaceful world

To the Editor:

I wish to thank the Herald for "The faces of the fallen" (Sept. 10-16), the remembrance of the residents of our village who perished on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center. Particular thanks for publishing the photos of those who died that fateful day, since the memories of their loss are only etched deeper in our minds when we connect the faces with the 48 names adorning the somber memorial in their honor at the Village Green.

As I have done since the beautifully crafted memorial was erected, I visit the site each Sept. 11 at the same time the tragic event occurred, to sit and recount the horrible effects of that occasion and to offer what meager prayers I can to grant peace to those who died, to their families and to our wounded nation, which suffered immensely both then and now, in the aftermath.

While deep in my solitary thoughts on a rather dank and dreary day this Sept. 11, I heard a voice behind me say, "Hi, Mick." I was pleased to see that it was our police commissioner, Jack McKeon, my dear friend for many years. Both Jack and I were, and will always be, military people. Death and sacrifice are no strangers to us, and over the years we have attended memorial services for fallen comrades in arms, police and firemen, and victims of horrendous acts of violence. It is always good to be with people who share your feelings of duty, honor and country.
