Rockville Centre remembers those lost on Sept. 11, 2001

The faces of the fallen

Posted

Since October 2002, Rockville Centre residents and the families and friends of those from the community who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 20001 have had a peaceful place to relect on and remember the events of that tragic day.

In the far northwest corner of the Village Green, at Maple and Lee avenues, is an eight-ton granite monument and memorial inscribed with the words: “Forever in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. We will never forget those from our community lost on September 11, 2001.”

On the back is the inscription: “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.”

Side pieces bear the names of each of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks who were part of the community of Rockville Centre.

Village residents, and families and friends of the victims, are invited to Rockville Centre’s annual Candlelight Vigil at the memorial on Oct. 24, a Sunday evening, at 7 p.m.
