Rockville Centre Soccer Club to celebrate 40 years

The community is invited to join the Rockville Centre Soccer Club on the evening of March 4 as its members celebrate its 40th anniversary at the St. Agnes Parish Center.

The event, which will cost $65 per person prior to March 4, and $75 at the door, will feature cocktails, a buffet dinner and music by Jerry & The Newcomers.

All proceeds will benefit the Tighe Field Renovation Project. The field, at Mill River, was renamed “Tighe Field” in 2003 in honor of Steve Tighe, a former Rockville Centre Soccer Club player, board member and coach who was lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Steve’s passion for the game was unprecedented. He loved to play but loved coaching even more. Steve was very generous with his time and talent and taught the beautiful game to countless players in the village. Three other beloved Rockville Centre soccer coaches who also perished on Sept. 11 included Jimmy Geyer, Ed Geraghty and Jim Cove.  

As a matter of history, Tighe Field was the first home field for the club and is the only dedicated grass soccer field in the village. The field became the club’s home at the request of former board members Bob Livingstone, Dick Schroeder, Peter Bralower and others, when the club was in its infancy with just a handful of travel teams. They had a vision that the club would continue to grow in the years to come, and they were right. With more than 2,000 players currently registered and field space a constant challenge, Tighe Field is a vital part of the club’s program.

Tighe Field is in need of major renovation and seasonal maintenance is critical to its future. Club organizers hope the public will join them and help restore this venue back to the premier field it once was — one that children can play on for generations to come. In an effort to achieve that goal, the club will produce a journal and asks village residents, local businesses and teams to consider taking an ad to help with the project.
