Sandra Quinn, a Hewitt student in Irma Altman’s third grade class, will go on to the national level in the PTA Reflections Program — a first for the school.

She is one of a handful of Rockville Centre students who rose to the top in the national competition that encourages students to creatively express themselves with an original piece from one of six categories: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film production or music.

The district's winners also include Christopher Murray from Watson Elementary School who won the Award of Merit for his film production — the second highest award in New York state.

Isabeau Tomkiel from Covert Elementary School won the Award of Merit for Visual Arts, also the second highest New York state award.

Zachary Ryan, a fifth grader from Watson Elementary School, was a finalist in the Nassau Regional Level for Literature.

Kailey Sewell, a second grade student, also from Watson, was a finalist at the Nassau Regional Level for Video Production.

Kelsey Barrett, a third grade student from Watson as well, was a finalist in the Nassau Regional Level for Visual Arts.

And Kiersten Colvin, a fifth grade student from Wilson Elementary School, was also a finalist in the Nassau Regional Level for Visual Arts.

This year’s theme, “Beauty Is…” inspired Sandra to choreograph a dance to Cindy Lauper’s “True Colors.”

“I wanted people to know that beauty is all of the colors that you see around you every day,” said Sandra.
