Rockville Centre's Maple Pointe seniors reminisce at Red Hat meeting

Most of the women in the room, now in their 80’s, were in their teens or early 20’s during World War II. But these senior ladies, residents of Maple Pointe Assisted Living at 260 Maple Ave., had vivid memories of wartime. Those memories were brought to light on May 25 during the first meeting of Maple Pointe’s Red Hat Society, an informal ladies-only club that seeks to bring together common interests and vibrant memories.

“The 65-cents an hour you made on your job was very important,” said Ruth Klein, a Maple Pointe resident who led the group. “Money was very tight.”

“I stood in line for nylon stockings,” recalled Chrysanthe Stekas.

“I was an ambulance driver,” said Peggy Drennan.

“I worked for the signal corps,” chimed in Norma Greenberg.

“How many of you had a husband in the military?” asked Ms. Klein. Many hands went up, triggering reminiscences of life in military towns.

“We lived in Oscoda, Michigan. There were French pilots training there,” recalled Madeline Seebeck.

Most of the women wore red hats they decorated to their liking. The meeting was brought to a close with a toast and a promise of more good times ahead.
