Rockville Centre Mayor Francis Murray travelled to Washington, D.C. to attend the United States Conference of Mayors 80th Winter Meeting that took place this week.

In a brief interview with the Herald before he left, Murray said he would be meeting with Sen. Charles Schumer’s staff and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, and that he would be looking into grant opportunities.

In addition to his legislative meetings and a conference schedule that includes a number of featured speakers, Murray said that he and his wife, Barbara, who accompanied him, would be taking a tour of the White House. They were also planning to attend a private reception at the Kennedy Center on Monday, which was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when Prof. Clarence Jones, a confidant of King’s who played a large part in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, was set to receive the 10th annual John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award. Jones personally invited the mayor when he visited with political and religious leaders in Rockville Centre last week.
