Rockville Centre's seniors enjoy an afternoon of old-time fun

Fifty members of Sandel Senior Center gather for event

It’s been a busy summer at the Sandel Senior Center, with back-to-back parties. The festivities on Aug. 13 were the third fun event in a row.

Program Coordinator Kathe Hardenburgh said that about 50 members of the center gathered to bring back the joys of their youth. They played games that included hopscotch and pick up sticks, jacks, marbles, Old Maid, checkers and a candy roulette.

Members brought old time toys along as well, and ate candy popular during the 20s, 30s and 40s — such as licorice and penny candy. They totally enjoyed a soda fountain, from which they made old time Egg Creams. The event was accompanied by music from performers such as Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.

The Afternoon of Old-Time Fun was the brainchild of the members of “Talk It Out,” a Tuesday afternoon program run by the center’s social worker, Wendy Weinstock.

“The seniors loved it so much,” said Hardenburgh, “that we are planning to have a similar kind of event next year with even more fun old-time games.”
