Rockville Centre's Troop 860 flies high

The Center for Science Teaching and Learning at the Tanglewood Preserve is home to I.FLY Flying Trapeze, the only flying trapeze on Long Island, and visiting members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 860 wasted no time in taking to the ropes.

First, the girls were given a half hour of instruction that explained what they were going to do. Then their instructors showed the girls, still on the ground, how to swing the trapeze and bring their legs over its bar to hang upside down.

When it came time to fly, the Girl Scouts swung upside down and reached out over their heads as the instructor grabbed them by the hands and they released their legs from the bar. Even cadette mother Marianne Bochilo gave it a try. The whole class took an hour and half — and it was $40 for children under 14; $50 for adults.

Members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 860 from left, are Emily Bochilo, Kaitlyn Rosenbaum, Katie Negroni, Catherine Dunne, Olivia Levenstein (standing), Nicole Giammarino and Samantha Dickmann. In the background are instructors Marco Rosamilia and Dean Chapman helping 86-year-old Joe Malcolmson who has become a regular on the trapeze.
