Romaine lettuce still unsafe; Mercy doctor offers tips

Just two days before Thanksgiving, households across the country trashed their lettuce heads and salads after the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported an E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce.

A week later, many want to know if they can return to romaine — the simple answer is no.
On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported that 43 people in 12 states have fallen ill due to the E. coli outbreak and linked the diseased lettuce to the “end of season” harvest in parts of California.
Regarding the food-safety issue, Dr. Michael Moskowitz, co-chairman of Catholic Health Services’ Primary Care Service Line at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, offered advice to consumers, retailers and restaurants. To learn more, visit www.cdc.gov/ecoli.
