Sounds of the season in Rockville Centre

Josephine Piccininni regaled the audience with her amazing voice, singing “Silent Night,” the first solo of the medley. The crowd did not respond with silence to her performance.

Chris Jahn, the Sandel Center’s cook, showed off another talent when he filled in for Florence Hardgrove and sang her solo of “We Need A Little Christmas.” In the background, Carol Bonwich watched with enjoyment and a smile.

It was standing room only as a large crowd gathered at the Sandel Senior Center for a festive holiday luncheon on Dec. 17. They enjoyed familiar sounds of the season — many Christmas standards — performed by the Center Stage Chorus of nearly 40 singers, under the direction of Frank Scafuri, who also played the piano. Several choraleers regaled the diners with solos, and Chris Jahn, the center’s chef, also took a turn at the microphone.

After introductions and greetings from Dr. Cyd Charrow, the center’s director and Deputy Director Chris O’Leary, members enjoyed a very warm and special afternoon, complete with hugs, well wishes and lots of laughter, before the center closed for the week between Christmas and the new year. Another gala luncheon, to officially ring in 2011, is set for this Friday.
