Educators say literacy begins on the day you are born. With the objective to provide books to new mothers, as well as to expand the library in the Pediatric Division of South Nassau Communities Hospital, three eighth grade students at South Side MIddle School and Assistant Principal Rosemarie Cammarata held a book drive at the school. Each morning, they collected baby and children’s books.

With three densely packed cartons, the girls delivered the books to the Labor and Delivery Unit at the hospital.

Mary Liz Simmons-Sherlock graciously accepted the books and gave the students a tour of the maternity area.
