The building at 2 Lincoln Ave. was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon when Rockville Centre Building Department officials determined that the structure was in potential danger of collapse following the failure of columns in the parking garage underneath the building.

As village officials, police and fire personnel and building occupants watched, workers from the Pill Fence Company of Oceanside erected structural supports to shore up the building. Engineers from H2M, an architectural and engineering company in Melville, arrived to inspect the building on Tuesday night.

H2M engineers determined that of the 30 columns situated in the parking garage, four to six were exposed. However, Mickey Chan, who is one of the company's engineers, told the Rockville Centre Building Department that the building was most likely safe and not in imminent danger of collapse.

Construction of the two Lincoln Avenue building finished in 1987. There have been periodic building inspections to it over the years along with numerous alterations to its internal structure.
