Winds of winter buffet Rockville Centre

Posted

Rockville Centre awoke in the throes of a nor'easter that hit Long Island early Thursday morning, and was expected to bring 6 to 10 inches of snow, sleet and rain.

High winds, heavy snow and sleet hammered the area, with precipitation accumulating at a rate of one to two inches per hour. Some residents fought to clear their driveways and sidewalks, while trying to avoid getting hit in the face by stinging ice.

The snow was expected to change to rain this afternoon, and in combination with the already snowy streets and high winds, is expected to freeze over. Driving is extremely hazardous, and officials advise residents to avoid venturing out on the roads unless it is absolutely necessary.
