Town waives recreational fees for military personnel Independence Day weekend

Posted

To salute the veterans and active service personnel in honor of Independence Day, Hempstead Town will waive parks’ admission fees on the July 4th weekend for active military personnel and veterans who are residents of the town.

The waivers will allow past and present officers to visit town parks, pools, beaches and a gold course for free this weekend. Supervisor Kate Murray announced the initiative on Thursday morning, saying it was a way of thanking those who have made the sacrifices that have protected the “greatest nation in the world.”

“The men and women who have defended our freedoms in this country and those who continue to keep us safe deserve to know that we appreciate their efforts,” Murray said. “Independence Day is a great day for us to salute our vets and service personnel. By waiving parks, beach and pool fees during the fourth of July weekend, we are saying ‘thank you’ for all they have done and continue to do.”

The fee waiver will apply to all 23 town pools, every Town of Hempstead beach and Merrick Road Golf Course. Eligible persons include all veterans of war and those currently serving in the armed forces.

Military personnel will have fees waived on July 4, 5 and 6. All veterans and current service personnel must produce proper military/veterans’ identification to partake in the fee waiver.

“What better way to salute our veterans and active military personnel than to ‘give back’ on their special day,” Hempstead Town Senior Councilman Anthony Santino said. “I am proud of our veterans, and want to say ‘thank you.’”

Town officials said the fee waiver does not discount seasonal beach and pool passes, and will not result in refunds on previously purchased tickets/passes to town facilities. The fee waiver also does not guarantee a “tee-time” at Merrick Road Golf Course, and tee times are “first come/first served.” The golf fee waiver does not apply to Lido Golf Course.

The fee waiver will apply to military personnel and veterans, and cannot be extended to family and guests. Veterans and military service personnel must be residents of Hempstead Town to be eligible.

“We owe our veterans and active military service personnel a debt we can never repay,” concluded Murray. “I am proud to be an American, and this fee waiver is one way that we can express our gratitude during the July 4 weekend.”
