Learning the trades in Levittown

GC Tech holds an open house

For many students in Levittown and the surrounding districts, it’s pretty clear what path they will take after graduation. So why not start now? The Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center, known simply as GC Tech, held an open house on Jan. 7 to showcase new and existing course offerings. Held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, students were able to present their work to those interested in joining the programs.

“We offer alternatives for students who may find this type of education right for them,” Director Frank Creter said. “We are providing them with a skill set that the work force is so desperate for today.”

With almost 200 students enrolled in the programs, GC Tech has become popular for those who want to hone in on a specific career field or skill. The eight course programs include automotive technology, computer animation, cosmetology, culinary arts, electrical technology, graphic arts and printing, medical assisting, and police science and emergency medical training.

“Vocational education has come full circle and the state has a call for it,” Creter added. “Our students are benefitting from the skills that they require for the work force, where college is still a choice for them. We are able to give them internship opportunities and real-world application while still at the high school level.”

Although students have the option of joining an independent track, they still need to complete academic requirements. Students take general courses such as English and math at their home school during the morning or afternoon and spend the other half of the day at Levittown Memorial, itself a former high school.

“We have close relationships with all schools as far as busing, or any student concerns, where we can report back to their guidance counselors,” Creter said.

“I get involved a lot more here more then at my actual high school,” MacArthur senior Sophia Jimenez said. “It’s actually something I’m interested in and I’m able to meet so many different people.”
