More than 200 children gathered at the Seaford Harbor School to celebrate a summer of learning. They were all invited to the Seaford Public Library’s summer reading program finale, which featured a visit from Mad Science — an interactive program designed to both entertain and educate.

Seaford typically has one of the highest participation rates of any library on Long Island for its summer reading program, and that was the case again this year. According to children’s librarian Jackie Lopez, about 700 kids signed up for the program. There were also more than 250 teenage volunteers who helped out by keeping track of reading logs and awarding prizes. “It was a good year,” she said. “It was awesome.”

“Mad Scientist” Bob Taylor conducted several experiments that the children going “ooh” and “ahh,” and even invited children up to the front to help him out. Many were given a chance to ride a hovercraft. The program was hosted by the Friends of the Seaford Library.

This year’s summer reading program theme was “Every Hero Has a Story.”
