David J. Hersh, M.D., a Board Certified Cardiologist, specializes in hypertension and other heart-related conditions. Last month, he moved his practice into a state-of-the-art facility in Bellmore. There, he is equipped to do EKG’s, ultrasound, echocardiograms, vascular testing, and treadmill stress tests. As he has privileges at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, as well as several excellent South Shore Long Island hospitals, one can be sure that the highest level of cardiac care will be available, if needed.

“Risk factor modification” is one of the preventative approaches taken by Dr. Hersh. In addition to treating hypertension, or high blood pressure, he targets high cholesterol, obesity and family history with issues. He suggests that anyone who has any of these risks should start getting cardiac evaluations early on. He advocates proper diet and exercise to avoid extra weight, which is a strain on the heart. Symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath should be treated immediately.

Among the numerous articles Dr. Hersh has authored and had published, Hypertension: a brief overview talks about his specialty – the chronic condition of high blood pressure. Hypertension is commonly diagnosed when readings are consistently 140/90 or higher. It must be treated, since it becomes a major risk factor for life-threatening conditions such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or kidney failure. Dr. Hersh explains that elevated blood pressure itself rarely comes with any symptoms or warning signs. For this reason, it is important that blood pressure be monitored routinely.

Dr. Hersh suggests that patients with hypertension should reduce salt intake and engage in regular aerobic exercise – three to four times a week for at least 30 minutes. Alcohol should be limited, and one’s diet should be rich in fruits and vegetables. While lifestyle changes may help, there are times when it isn’t enough, and drug treatment is necessary.

Dr. Hersh attended New York Medical School in Valhalla, NY, and did his residency in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. From 2005 to 2009 he did Hypertension and Preventive Cardiology, and Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowships at Lenox Hill Hospital as well. He has been working on Long Island since, and opened Heart Health of the South Shore in August 2013.
