The Levittown School District is mourning Board of Education Trustee Kevin J. Regan, who died on Oct. 20 after a battle with cancer. He was 72.

The retired New York City police detective and Woodhaven, Queens native was elected to a third term on the Levittown school board in May. He was serving as vice president.

“He was a good cop and proud of it,” Trustee Michael Pappas said. “He always did the right thing and took pride in his work, school district and community.”

Regan, described as a “calming influence” on the board, attended John J. College for Criminal Justice and lived in Levittown for 44 years. He was a father to three and a grandfather to six, all of whom attended Levittown public schools.

“As a member of the Levittown school board, he was always fair and he looked to do the best for the greatest number of people, keeping individual needs in mind,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said. “He was always a staunch supporter of ‘what’s best for kids,’ and pitched in wherever and whenever possible to make the lives of our children better.”

Regan worked with various organizations including the Levittown Kiwanis Club, Levittown Chamber of Commerce, Levittown Soccer Club, NYPD Holy Name Society, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Long Island Junior Soccer League and Island Trees Youth Council to give back to the community.

“He gave children and young kids the opportunity to play all sports, whatever it may be,” Pappas said. “He really did everything for the good of others.”

Regan also worked for the Town of Hempstead as the deputy commissioner in the Department of Engineering while volunteering with the many organizations that were dear to his heart.

“His contribution to our lives can never be quantified,” McDonald said. “But in the near future, the Board of Education and administration will decide how to best express our appreciation and remembrance of Kevin. Of course, we will seek input from our community and the blessing of Kevin’s family before any decisions are made.”
