This elegant 1924 line drawing by Renè Cinquin (1898-1978) captures with perfection a forgotten green space that once graced our village. The park is just one of the many illustrations featured in Cinquin’s Aero-view of Valley Stream, a “bird’s eye” map that faithfully depicted Valley Stream during that time. In today’s parlance, it would be a considered a pocket park; a small public space, located on an irregularly-shaped plot of land. more

With the sun beating down at mid-morning, a girls’ cross-country team was recently running up and down the half-mile-long hill on the south side of the Town of Hempstead’s Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, sweating profusely and breathing hard in the 90-degree-plus heat. Taking it all in from the side of the seashell-coated path was a red fox –– yes, a red fox –– which stood in the shade, motionless and silent, panting continuously, its eyes half-shut. The runners appeared unfazed by its presence. more

A man who was wandering around and got stuck in the storm drains under Valley Stream was rescued this morning by a task force of over 100 responders from the Nassau County Police, several fire departments and EMS personnel. Emergency responders said they believe the man is homeless and may suffer from mental illness. more

After a six-year hiatus, fireworks are returning to Jones Beach for the Fourth of July. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on May 26 the revival of the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, bringing back the Long Island patriotic tradition last held at the state park in 2009. more
