21 medals for District 13 athletes

District 13 students were very successful at the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, held last Friday at Mitchel Field. The district captured eight gold medals, seven silvers and six bronze. In addition, several children received certificates and ribbons for fourth- and fifth-place finishes.

“The day was a huge success,” said Lisa Sells-Asch, assistant superintendent for special services. “We had a bunch of winners.”

This was the first time the Valley Stream elementary school district has participated in the Games, which features athletes from across New York state. District 13 had 15 students take part. In addition, each athlete was paired with a student buddy and a staff chaperone.

Children participated in relay races, discus, soft discus, club throw and distance kick. They were led by the district’s occupational therapist, Shoshana Bazini.

The athletes will be presented with their awards at the June 22 Board of Education meeting.
