Bike racks installed in downtown Valley Stream

Four decorative bike racks were installed on Aug. 15 in downtown Valley Stream to test the interest of the community for more, Mayor Ed Fare said, and all of the racks point toward the village’s business district.

“Even if people don’t use them, it sends the message that foot and bike traffic are welcome in Valley Stream,” said Fare.

He said he presented the idea to the village board on a whim, and it was well received. People often fasten bicycles to street signs or parking meters, according to Fare, and this gives riders more security. Additionally, he said the racks match the forest green color of Rockaway Avenue’s street lamps as per the village’s style guide.
