Valley Stream scavenger hunt begins April 22

Chamber launches new initiative to connect residents and businesses

Community scavenger hunts are not a new concept, but it is to Valley Stream, and local residents will soon have a chance to do some exploring right in their hometown.
The Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first scavenger hunt, which will run from April 22-28. Residents will be able to get a list of items to find around the community.

David Sabatino, a Chamber board member and owner of Sip This on Rockaway Avenue, said he saw a community scavenger hunt in a town in upstate New York and thought it would be a great idea for Valley Stream. He said it is an opportunity for people to get to know their local businesses.

The scavenger hunt list will be released the morning of April 22. People will have to look for objects in storefront windows, and in some cases, they will have to go inside. Other clues will lead people to various community landmarks.

Sabatino said the final list will have 15 to 20 items on it, and all can be found in Valley Stream. He said people can take pictures of their finds and email it, or they can drop off their documentation at Sip This when the search is complete.

“I don’t want to give too much away,” he said, “but at one of the spots, there’s going to be some sweets that are being given away for free.”

People completing the hunt will be ranked based on who compiles the most accurate list in the shortest amount of time. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded, which will include gift cards to Michael’s and the Green Acres Mall.

Sabatino said that residents can do the hunt individually, or as part of a team with up to five people. To make it fun, he said, teams can even pick a name. The only requirements are that one person from each team must live in the village, North Valley Stream, Mill Brook or South Valley Stream, and be at least 18 years old.

He said the goal of the event is to create new relationships between residents and the business community. If a Valley Streamer learns of a store in their town they didn’t know existed, that would make the scavenger hunt a success, he explained.
