A community Read Aloud at Brooklyn Avenue

Posted

Brooklyn Avenue School hosted its third annual Read Aloud day on May 19. Each of the school’s 16 classes had a guest reader, which included district administrators, board of education members, teachers, elected officials and community members. Readers not only shared a book with students, but also answered questions about their career.

Among the readers was Dr. Scott Comis, principal of Brooklyn Avenue School, who read “Oh the Places You’ll Go” to Beth Becker’s sixth-grade class. He split the reading with Superintendent Dr. Edward Fale. The book was given to Comis by his brother when he was making the transition from law enforcement to education, and he chose it for the Read Aloud, he explained, because sixth-graders will soon make their own transition to junior high school. He wanted them to know that they can be successful even in times of change.

The event was organized by school librarian Stephanie Cuozzo. The goal of the annual read aloud is to show students that if they work hard, they can become an important member of their community, just like the readers.
