District 13 appointed a new principal for the Wheeler Avenue School last week to replace Christine Zerillo, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Gayle Steele, assistant principal of the Sunquam Elementary School in the Half Hollow Hills School District, was unanimously approved by the Board of Education to take over District 13’s largest elementary school. She previously was a fifth-grade teacher in Half Hollow Hills and has also taught in Elmont and New York City schools.

Steele was surrounded by her family and colleagues at the March 27 board meeting to celebrate her appointment. She was chosen from a committee of administrators, teachers, parents and staff, and was one of two finalists interviewed by the Board of Education. Her first day as principal will be July 1.

The Hewlett-Woodmere School District has named a new principal for Ogden Elementary School, which is located in Valley Stream. Dina M. Anzalone was officially approved by the Board of Education at its March 28 meeting. She will succeed Joan Biringer-Haig, who is retiring.

Anzalone has served as the district’s director of curriculum and assessment since 2007. Before coming to Hewlett-Woodmere, she served as the language arts lead teacher (K-6) and a kindergarten teacher in the Oceanside district, and was the literacy staff developer and a first-grade teacher for District 18 in Brooklyn.
