Cahill’s widow grateful for all the support

To the Editor:

My heart overflows with thanks to so many in our beloved Valley Stream community for their kindness and support during my husband’s illness and upon his passing. Your cards, kind gestures, phone calls, visits and prayers continuously boosted Eddie’s morale during a challenging time, and sustain me now. Over the last several months, Eddie often told me how fortunate he felt to have enjoyed 82 years with no regrets. Your outpouring of affection and good wishes made him feel that much more blessed.

My deepest appreciation to Jim Darcy for the gift of his friendship. Day after day, even before Eddie got sick, Jim demonstrated that he was more than a great friend. He is truly a great man. As difficult as these past months have been, Eddie and I always felt secure because Jim was with us every step of the way. To Maureen Weeden and Gerry Frusci, my deep gratitude for always being ready, willing and able to help with anything asked, and for your incredibly generous spirits. To Father Tom Harold and the Holy Name of Mary Parish, I thank you for the spiritual support and comfort. To Rabbi Yitzhak Goldschmid, I am so grateful for your regular visits that nourished Eddie’s soul. He felt a bond to you that filled him with meaningful solace and contentment.

The Valley Stream Fire Department demonstrated such tremendous respect and dignity as an honor guard at the wake, funeral and burial. The members’ generosity and hospitality at the post-cemetery luncheon was so moving. Eddie held the department in such high esteem and marveled at their volunteerism, selflessness and bravery. I appreciate it all on his behalf.

To the residents of Valley Stream who inspired him into political office, I thank you for honoring him with the privilege of serving you. The village work force touched Eddie’s heart and mine, with their devotion to him. Please know how proud he was of you. He was especially proud to tell others how dedicated you are to his beloved Valley Stream.

Finally, I thank and wish all the best to Deputy Mayor Joanne Antun. She has assumed the mantle of leadership with great skill. Eddie asked her to serve as his deputy not only because of her long history of service and her talents, but because he knew she would share his desire to put the village’s interests at the forefront of decision making. He felt confident that she would do so with distinction and humility. My very best wishes and support in the months and years ahead as she continues to do the people’s work with integrity and heart.

Mary Ann Cahill
