Principal Rosario Iacono was colder than most on Feb. 5, enduring ice-cold water dumped on him as he sat for the principal’s challenge, marking the end of the school’s superhero-themed Parents as Reading Partners program that began on Jan. 5.

“If it encourages reading, I’m up for any challenge,” Iacono said. “But now I know how Mr. Freeze feels!”

Iacono was doused 21 times, first by kindergarteners with Dixie cups and successively larger containers by members of each grade, culminating with sixth-graders wielding fire buckets filled with ice cubes.

The PTA-sponsored program began with a pep rally on Jan. 5. Librarian Kate Lallier divided the school’s students into four superhero groups: the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Justice League and the X-Men. Teams earned points by entering various contests, visiting the public library, writing book reviews and reading.

The Avengers won the contest by returning the most reading logs.
