Central High athletes host talk at Wheeler School

Posted

Members of Central High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA) gave a talk to Wheeler Avenue sixth graders about how sports can serve as the vehicle for positive personal development, ultimately helping athletes make wiser choices—on and off the field. During their latest visit last month, club members were assigned a Wheeler class to explain the purpose of Athletes Helping Athletes, an organization dedicated “to promoting activities for young athletes that highlight the life lessons and skills inherent in sport so that they can experience the benefits and true value of athletic participation,” according to their website.

The upperclassmen began by sharing personal stories about how the values of sportsmanship and fair play have informed their life decisions and honed their leadership skills. Afterward, the Wheeler students were given challenging scenarios they could potentially encounter both in their athletic careers and their lives outside of sports and brainstormed ways to solve them.

This was Central’s AHA members’ second visit to the students at Wheeler this year, and they were excited to have the opportunity to connect with and guide their younger peers. The club plans to go for one more visit this year to discuss more serious topics such as bullying, drugs, and alcohol. This is in keeping with AHA’s commitment to tackling social issues such as substance abuse prevention, violence prevention, and physical activity.
