Central students join fight against breast cancer

Central High School students and alumni banded together in the fight against breast cancer by participating as a group in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Jones Beach on Oct. 16. In a weekend full of celebrations and fun surrounding Central’s Pep Rally and Homecoming festivities, this humbling reminder of the more important things in life was a perfect way to cap off a great weekend.

The group met in the parking lot of Jones Beach Field 4 bright and early just after 8 a.m. for breakfast. Magic Bagels kindly provided bagels and coffee for the group, which was desperately needed for all the sluggish teenagers arriving that early. After mingling, talking pictures and hanging out for about an hour, the group set off on the walk. Five miles sounded like a real trek for most of the people there, but on a beautiful day on the boardwalk of the beach, talking and hanging out with friends, it went by in a flash for everyone.

The walk was filled with people from everywhere, from students at other schools, to breast cancer survivors, or just ordinary people wanting to help out. There was no shortage of support for the cause.

Central graduate John DiGiaimo took part in the event. “I walked to fight breast cancer because I wanted to make an effort in finding a cure,” he said. “Showing support is one of the best things you can do.”

One thing for sure though is that Central this year, just like many previous years, is unwavering in its support in fighting this terrible disease. In the first three weeks of October alone, the school raised more than $2,000 through sales of T-shirts, water bottles and bracelets. The walk further united Central in this cause.
Senior Jenna Costanzo said, “It was such a gorgeous day and I really enjoyed walking with Central for such a good cause.”

“I love doing the walk every year,” added fellow senior Kimberly Riley, “because I enjoy seeing Central come together for a good cause.”

Central’s support in the fight against breast cancer is, has been, and always will be a united effort that will always reap the benefits of those who care enough to get involved.
