State Assemblymen Brian Curran and Ed Ra presented awards to the winners of the Flag Day essay and art contest last Sunday afternoon at the Hendrickson Park gazebo. Winners came from five Valley Stream schools in Curran’s 14th Assembly District and Ra’s 21st Assembly District.
Students were asked to write an essay or create a piece of artwork based on the questions, “What does the American flag mean to you?”
Curran, Ra and the winners were joined by veterans from various local American Legion and VFW posts. The veterans were guests of Curran and Ra, to serve as living examples for the children on the importance of honoring the flag, as a symbol of the country. Local veterans also served as judges for the contest.
