Three firefighters were injured while battling a house fire on Filbert Street on Dec. 27, according to Valley Stream Fire Department Chief Jason Croak, and despite responders’ attempts to save it, the homeowners’ dog, who was in the house at the time, died on the scene.

Firefighters received word of the blaze at around 6:30 p.m. Croak said. Flames engulfed the rear portion of the house while volunteers from multiple departments worked to extinguish the fire that had left much of the home charred and badly damaged. Croak said that the fire was mainly contained to the basement and first floor of the house.

Nearby, roughly six firefighters worked franticly to resuscitate the home’s family dog, which had been discovered and carried out of the house. Despite their efforts, they were unable save it.

“Unfortunately, the dog didn’t make it,” Croak said.

Valley Stream firefighters were on the scene within three minutes of being notified he reported. Members from the Elmont, Hewlett, Malverne, Innwood and Woodmere fire departments joined them, and Croak said the fire was under control within an hour.

The firefighters who suffered minor injuries were transported to local hospitals.

The Nassau County Fire Marshall is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
