Elmont Scout wins Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout packs across America, along with the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, hosted the 10th Annual “Founder’s District” annual Grand Prix Pinewood Derby on March 10. More than 100 local Cub Scouts submitted their “drivers” for the event, and raced their handmade miniature Pinewood Derby cars down a 40-foot long track at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream.

Hundreds attended the event — an annual tradition that first began in the 1950s. First-, second- and third-place trophies were awarded to Cub Scouts in four age levels: Tigers (first-graders), Wolves (second-graders), Bears (third-graders) and Webelos (fourth- and fifth-graders). Elmont resident Joshua Dixon, of Cub Scout Pack 263, placed first among the Tigers at the event.

Scouts received their Pinewood Derby car kit — wheels, axles and a wooden block — in January, and held local races before the finals on March 10. All Scouts received Pinewood Derby patches.

Elmont-based Pack 294 is planning to hold its Grand Prix Pinewood Derby in April. Check www.liherald.com for updates.
