On the Diamond

Here come Valley Stream's boys of summer

Baseball League begins 68th season

They’re called the boys of summer for a reason. On a hot, sunny day that felt more like mid-July than the first day of May, players from the Valley Stream Baseball League began their season.

But before children took to the diamond, opening day ceremonies were held at Firemen’s Field. The league, which was organized in 1943, began its 68th season. On hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch was Richard Totten, grandson of league founder Conrad Totten.

League President Bob Inzerillo thanked the coaches for giving their time, and the sponsors who help pay for uniforms, equipment, and all else necessary to play baseball.

There are more than 500 kids ages 4 to 16 signed up for teams this year.
