High school district to host college info night

The Valley Stream Central High School District will hold an early college information night on Monday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Central High School’s Keller Auditorium.

The purpose of the program is to provide ninth- and 10th-grade students and their parents with an overview of what colleges seek in successful applicants, so they can expand their academic pursuits and extra-curricular activities to better meet their college goals.

Four college admissions professionals will be presenting including Judy Burke-Berhanan, dean of admissions at SUNY Stony Brook; Claire Fitzgibbons, associate dean of admissions at Hofstra University; Kaitlyn Callahan, admissions officer for Columbia University; and Jill Goldstein, admissions representative for the City University of New York. Topics will include high school courses necessary for college admission, the timeline for the college application process the importance of Advanced Placement courses, college admissions testing, letters of recommendations, scholarships and campus visits.

Barbara Madigan, a guidance counselor at South High School will share information on study websites to help students with homework, and to review material for tests and quizzes.
