Hornets dominate for Homecoming

Posted

Five teams, five wins. It was a sweep for the Valley Stream Green Hornets youth football league last Sunday, as all of its teams won on Homecoming day at Firemen’s Field.

Playing on home field backed by an enthusiastic crowd motivated the players, who defeated opponents from West Islip, Broad Channel, Plainedge and Roosevelt.

After the first four games, play stopped for Homecoming festivities, with introductions of the teams and performances by the Green Hornets cheerleaders. Then, the varsity team wrapped up the day with big win over the Roosevelt Riders.

“It was a very successful day,” said Bobby Hawkey Jr. the league president and coach of the varsity team. “We had a great turnout.”

The football field at Firemen’s is named for Hawkey’s father, Bob Sr., who coached the varsity team for nearly six decades.
